Baby Boomers

Its Independence day in my country that I want to breath a little fresh air of freedom. I choosed to get back a little to our old days. Baby Boomers in america are dying every 49.5 seconds in 2008 One thousand seven hundred twenty boomers die every day in the US this year 2008. I became interested in this piece of news because I am also a member of this Baby Boomer Generation If this is happening to Americans in the US, can the Pinoys in the Philippines be far behind What are BabyBoomers? Who are they? Baby Boomers are babies born after Worl War II. More specifically those born in 1946 up to 1964 During the war years the birth rate in America and most anywhere in the world experienced a significant decline. Productive men and women were sent to the field for duty and service to their country. Everybody was kept busy fighting the wars that making babies seemed not the order of the day. Many people were dying not only of bullets but of hunger, food shortage lack of basic services and simply poverty and hardships It was the time of the phrase "survival of the fittest" Yes everyone was so concerned about war. When the war ended as Japan surendered in 1945, everyone, winners and losers cried tears of joy, heaved sighs of relief, while celebrating the days of deliverance from the evils of war. Men and women everyehere were sent home from the battlefield as they felt the fresh air of peace and stability. And soon after, these men and women, as if in a hurry to make up lost time were getting married. Husbands and wives were reunited with renewed vigor. As if everyone was so concerned about families,making love not war. And the results? More babies. American writers termed this experience BabyBoom. So, comes now the new age, The Baby Boomer generation. It was in this new peace time that the Boomer generation were the first to experience and be brought up with television in their homes, when transistor radios became popular and so personalised. The newBoomer generation with their kind of music, Rock N Roll, The Beatles, so with the Hippies,the time of protest and the protest movement, the conquest of space and the first man on the moon, the invention of the microwave, and the internet in 1969. How many were born in this generation? In the Philippines the population in 1946 was 18million more ore less and by 1964 it became 30million. Thus about 12million are Baby Boomers. In the US there are about 76million more or less during the same period. If the dying rate in America is also true in the Philippines, I feel being a member of this generation that I am getting nearer and nearer to the departure area every 49.5 seconds. Anyway being one of this Boomer generation means I am in my 60s Truly I became a member of the Senior Citizens Assembly a few months back.Some findings show majority of Senior Citizens today are still strong and healthy and living productive lives. However, many including myself a victim of stroke and a heart by pass surgery and osteo arthritis have become frail and sickly.Today many are traveling abroad, "Pinoy Diaspora" as Overseas FilipinoWorkers or OFW. I know I am also going to travel maybe not abroad as OFW but maybe a little further As to when my visa and passport are ready it is the concern of the office of my God and Creator. But with my prayers the proccessing of my travel documents may go slowly and considerably delayed much delayed than the passports of OFW s.# Yet who are running the world today? The seniors they just putting the young in the frontlines. bye
